ARIA – PERFORMING ART FESTIVAL

The ARIA festival, created in collaboration with the Municipality of Antrodoco, is dedicated to the contemporary performing arts, with a central focus on the fusion of influences from various artistic forms of expression. The festival aims to function as a metaphorical glue to rebuild the bond of closeness between people and create an exchange of emotions within a community.

The 2024 edition, under the artistic direction of Lorenzo Pasquali / Ondadurto Teatro, is enriched with significant collaborations and multidisciplinary performing arts events: a Summer Theatre Camp dedicated to the new generation, a show focussing on Italian dance for the under 35s supported by the SIAE – Per Chi Crea programme, a contemporary circus and urban art performance supported by the Lazio Region and, last but not least, a European project with the funding of Creative Europe.

The programme presents a varied array of performances and events that are sure to satisfy the tastes of a wide range of audiences. This year’s line-up embodies values related to inclusion and non-discrimination and brings together some of the most prominent national and international figures in the contemporary performing arts

The theme of imagination, as always, remains a common meeting ground for the various performances, while this edition of the festival will be enhanced through collaboration with artists from France, Poland, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, Greece and Italy.

Learn more about this year’s line-up: art is not only for the big cities, but can also be found in small towns, in Antrodoco, a place where we can find new, shared journeys.

Theatrical activities allow us to create an opportunity for growth and education that, through the practices of listening, viewing and creation, can lead to moments of reflection on the importance of respect for others, the practice of empathy towards those around us and, at the same time, listening to yourself and a journey of self-discovery. A unique way to rediscover the concept of wonder.

Body in Motion laboratory >> COMMON GROUND project

The laboratory, led by Marco Augusto Chenevier, a choreographer, dancer, director and actor, will actively engage participants in the practices of movement, which were part of the creative process of the site-specific dance project entitled UN SOLO RESPIRO (A SINGLE BREATH). Chenevier, as an artist-creator, conducts research that crosses different linguistic codes, explores their limits and challenges form and structure, thereby creating original hybrids that are born from the fusion of dance, theatre, circus, cabaret, board games and technology. UN SOLO RESPIRO aims to reinvent urban spaces by engaging with the people who happen to be passing through them. Participation is open to all ages, experiences and backgrounds but, above all, to those who are curious to put themselves out there.

COURTYARD OF SANTA CHIARA – 18.30

SONG OF THE WORLD

TEATR BRAMA (PL)

polyphonic concert >> PERIFERIE ARTISTICHE project

Teatr Brama’s repertoire of songs mainly includes traditional songs of European origin. Nowadays, these have largely been forgotten by most people, although for years they were sung both in everyday life and on special occasions. They are the key to understanding the basis of modern culture. The emotions and atmosphere created by these songs tell us about their origins. Each country has its own harmonies, rhythms and symbols. Finding the common denominator in these songs is living proof of the shared roots of our European culture.

dance/lab participants’ performance >> COMMON GROUND project

Presentation to the public of the work carried out during the UN SOLO RESPIRO (A SINGLE BREATH) laboratory. The project aims to reinvent urban space through choreographic performances and laboratories that include professional artists and participants of all levels. The research focuses on sharing and experiencing the present moment, rather than a mere representation. Music for the event will be derived from the surroundings, but musicians are welcome to enrich the experience. The improvisational system, developed over years of practice, fosters a deep connection between the dancers, students, professionals and amateurs and the public space, transforming each performance into a unique and unpredictable experience.

The performance will make its way through the town of Antrodoco with live music and dance-theatre, international artists will address the issue of instability – metaphorically and literally – by focusing on the search for roots and ascribing a common value to our respective homelands.

SINOPIA

PERGALLINI – PITARRESI (IT)

dance >> SIAE project

by and with Marco Pergallini and Maria Stella Pitarresi

Two bodies, expelled from Earthly Paradise, find themselves catapulted into a new, hostile and profane land. There, they are compelled by the force of gravity to join their bodies together, one on top of the other. They strive to maintain this lofty, vertical position but they inevitably fall from grace. The dancers thus begin to feel like layers of each other, as well as the layers that make up the earth. The title, SINOPIA, refers to the ancient technique (sinopie) used in fresco painting in which the artist lays down a preliminary drawing using a red-brown pigment (sinopia), which is then covered in a thin layer of plaster to act as a guide for the final painting. Just as the underpainting informs the final image but remains hidden under a layer of plaster, the moment of union between the bodies of the dancers acts as a sinopia for the piece itself.
Taking the fresco by Masaccio, the “Expulsion from the Garden of Eden”, as its starting point, this performance explores the concept of the beginning, the origin of every living thing, even before life itself.

>> show focussing on Italian dance for the under 35s supported by the MiC (Italian Ministry of Culture) and the SIAE – “Per Chi Crea” programme

WONDER! LAB SHOW

ONDADURTO TEATRO (IT)

Summer Theatre Camp Show >> COMMON GROUND project

How can we build a better, more sustainable and caring world? What if art were the only “means” to do so? The beauty of the world around us can only be rediscovered if we remember to always look at it with new eyes, like a child seeing it for the first time. The wonder that takes shape through the languages of the performing arts allows us to imagine and construct new realities.
The children and teenagers from the local community of Antrodoco and the surrounding areas, who participated in the Summer Theatre Camp, will be performing on stage as the protagonists of this lab show.

PIAZZA IV NOVEMBRE – 18:00

PROSPERO

STALKER TEATRO (IT)

performative installation >> neiBORGHI project

with Stefano Bosco, Silvia Sabatino, Elena Pisu and Sancho Sangiorgi

PROSPERO, like the name of the famous protagonist of The Tempest by Shakespeare: an Italian name, with a significant resonance in international culture. In Shakespeare’s play, Prospero is an exiled ruler who uses magic to bring his daughter back to power. He is a creator of the imaginary, someone who manages to shape his own and others’ destinies by using magic: a “science” that can be used to study and learn about the universe and the whole of human nature. Prospero is the creator of his own story, like an artist who creates with their own imagination, by shaping and composing substances and materials. A performance that transforms space/time, engaging the public in the creation of a setting-architecture: a happening of the “here and now”.

ABATTOIR BLUES

COMPAGNIA LUIGI CIOTTA (IT)

contemporary circus >> ARIA project

A dreamlike, surreal, comic, cruel and exciting show that uses clowning and circus techniques to tackle the issue of the living conditions of humans and animals inside slaughterhouses in an irreverent and non-moralistic way. An alienating and repetitive work, which lends itself to the choreography of movement and circus to express its relational tension with life, suspended between gravity and death. The show combines puppetry, circus, physical theatre, magic and comedy in a such a way that words themselves give way to sounds, cries and noises, both recorded and live.

A BETTER PLACE

SPELLBOUND CONTEMPORARY BALLET (IT)

dance >> SIAE project

Choreographed and directed by Mauro Astolfi
with Anita Bonavida and Alessandro Piergentili

A BETTER PLACE is the idealistic search for a place that is always better. A place designed for yourself but to where you can attract someone else. Two people walk around each other, sniff each other and spend time trying to provoke a reaction, where the desired behaviour is achieved not only by acting in a captivating manner but, often, by relying on the loss of individual autonomy… The best place can only be the place where you can choose independently, even if we are often actually guided in that choice, the place where you, yourself choose to be.

ASCENT

SPELLBOUND CONTEMPORARY BALLET (IT)

dance

choreography by Mauro Astolfi
with Giuliana Mele e Lorenzo Beneventano

ASCENT is the symbol of a concept of creative destruction, a process of continuous change that incessantly revolutionises the structure of a relationship, relentlessly destroying the old one and constantly creating a new way of seeing the other person.
It is a circular action, free from established patterns, which uses divergent thinking as the only possible solution to avoid falling into the trap in which the end of one relationship automatically triggers the beginning of another.

PARCHEGGIO NUOVO – LARGO ITALIANI NEL MONDO – 22:00

CHANCES – SEGUNDAS OPORTUNIDADES

CIA PIERO PARTIGIANONI (ES)

clown theatre >> neiBORGHI project

Have you ever dreamt of flying?
Icarus, our red-nosed hero, always dreams of spreading his wings and discovering unknown lands.
Every time he is about to take flight, the illusion collapses. But then he hears a recurring voice, as if it were a dream, reminding him that “it is much safer to keep your feet on the ground” and anyway, why take unnecessary risks? After several failed attempts, life once again offers him a second chance: “who says lightning never strikes twice!?”
A theatrical clown show where comedy and bitter irony blend with delicate poetics.

PEACEFUL PLACES

MARGHERITA LANDI – AGNESE LANZA (IT)

V.R. dance – new technology >> neiBORGHI project

There is something that touches all of us if we manage to let go of our own resistance and share a hug. The global pandemic has destroyed our confidence in this simple action. PEACEFUL PLACES refers to the space between our arms.
Can we learn to hug once again? Hugging is a gesture that we have all known and shared since we were born. Being in an embrace forces us to confront our own vulnerabilities and sometimes triggers discomfort due to being so close to another person. PEACEFUL PLACES allows everyone to transform their emotional state into movement, by developing the participant’s sense of compassion and training their body to embrace.
The project is a participatory and inclusive performance. It is an experience of closeness, thanks to real couples and their bodies and, at the same time, an experience of absence, of loneliness, because the physical touch and interaction are only imagined.

POOM-CHA is an interactive comedy with completely live music.
POOM-CHA is an energetic travelling show and an entertaining street performance where the crowd can gather around.
POOM-CHA is an energetic musical game: it is extravagant, funny, lively, eccentric, unrestrained, colourful, fascinating, unique and fizzing with life; it is irreverent, original and puts you in a good mood… and much more*

NOM’INDOSSO

BINARIO ZERO (IT)

contemporary circus >> ARIA project

NOM’ INDOSSO is the new show by BINARIO ZERO. An idealised big top transforms into a large skirt that encircles the most famous characters from Giacomo Puccini’s operas. Travelling on the composer’s vivid musical notes, the four artists on stage transport the female icons of his works into the contemporary world, touching upon their most intimate natures.
By deconstructing the material of the big top, as well as the characters’ own garments, we are taken on a journey that guides us from outward appearance to the inner being.

COME NEVE

ADRIANO BOLOGNINO (IT)

dance >> SIAE project

with Rosaria Di Maro and Noemi Caricchia

COME NEVE (LIKE SNOW) composes choreography as if it were crochet: an intricate yet sophisticated series of threads that are consciously interwoven to generate new forms.
It is said that crochet was born in a small village, where a woman, who was very skilled in handicrafts, was fascinated by the spectacle of snowflakes falling on her windowsill. So, she tried to reproduce their beauty with some cotton thread and a large hooked needle. Through the interweaving of these elements, after a sudden snowfall, the viewer is overrun by moving bodies; time stops and they are confronted with a moment of serene contemplation. For the artist, well-being is simply this: “ embrace a passion, then share it. Stitch back together a relationship with a loved one. Discover a new part of yourself and commit to nurturing it, always stitching a new piece of it.”

…FINO ALLE STELLE!

TEATRO DE GLI INCAMMINATI (IT)

Musical Theatre >> neiBORGHI project

with Agnese Fallongo and Tiziano Caputo

Sicily, the mid-1950s. Maria and Tonino set off without a penny to their names, to pursue their dream of glory, making their way through the regions of Italy and coming into contact with their respective historical heritages, dialects, customs and traditions. At the same time, they will also undergo a journey of introspection, knowledge and mutual appreciation, which is told with plenty of traditional music, romance, emotion and entertainment.
FINO ALLE STELLE! (ALL THE WAY TO THE STARS!) is a hilarious musical comedy with a typically local flavour that will allow the audience to rediscover traditions and memories of the past, which are still alive in the hearts of many.

BOXES

UNTERWASSER (IT)

performative installation >> neiBORGHI project

BOXES is a work of visual theatre, an installation made up of “boxes” containing micro-shows and interactive games, which can be enjoyed by one spectator at a time. The public is invited to experience a unique, personal, and exclusive event. By peering inside the boxes through small cracks and openings, the viewer is immersed in an intimate and protected space that contains miniature poetic worlds. BOXES is an open project, which stems from a reworking of “Lambe Lambe theatre” (a tradition of micro-theatre that is widespread in South America) and from research on the effects and techniques of pre-cinema. The project is a work in continuous progress, which is enriched by the collaboration and meeting with different artists.

ENTANGLEMENT

ZAKURO, GIARDINO CHIUSO (IT)

dance >> SIAE project

by and with Jennifer Lavinia Rosati and Lorenzo di Rocco

Thrown into a dimension where micro and macro blend in an elastic reality, two bodies explore the mysterious phenomenon of quantum mechanics, which Einstein defined as “action at a distance”, in which two microparticles, after being made to enter the same quantum state, remain connected even if placed at a great distance from each other.
This is how entanglement comes to life.
An infinite bond, which leaves an indissoluble trace in time and space.

DIASPORA – A CONTEMPORARY TRAGEDY

ANTAGON theaterAKTion – ONDADURTO TEATRO (IT/BRA/DE/ES/FR/UK/MEX)

Urban Theatre>> ARIA project

DIASPORA – A CONTEMPORARY TRAGEDY is a show inspired by The Trojan Women by Euripides, in which women – the women of Troy – suffer due to the consequences of war, occupation and the loss of their loved ones.
Through physical theatre, live music, video projections and sculptural scenography, an international ensemble of 20 people brings to the stage the lives of these women who have been transposed to the present day: who would they be today? How would Euripides describe the unspeakable impact of war on people’s lives today? How would you speak of innocent people, women, children and the elderly?
“Diaspora” from a new cultural and de-colonial perspective, in a world where borders, nations, fictitious barriers and cultural walls no longer have a reason to exist.
